To be eligible for the 93rd Academy Awards, films must meet all qualifications in their respective categories, including requirements pertaining to theatrical releases and exhibition formats. Special rules and submission requirements apply to awards in the Documentary, International Feature Film, Animated Feature, Music and Short Film categories. * The second Scientific & Technical Awards submission period allows individuals and companies with similar devices or claims of prior art the opportunity to submit achievements for review.

Oscar nominees for each category are determined by members of the relevant Academy branch or committee.
