About the festival

The Wirral International Film Festival was conceived in 2007 by Filmmakers Alan Veste and Phil Bimpson. They wanted at first to give a platform for local filmmakers to show their films to the
public. They also decided to include Wirral’s sister towns and provinces which were, Latina in Italy, Lorient and Gennevilliers in France and Midland Texas in U.S.A. So anyone with a Wirral connection were allowed to submit.

Alan & Phil flew to France and Italy to make connections with their filmmakers. While they were in Italy they met with the Director of The Latina Film Commission Rino Piccolo who showed great interest in what they were doing and has proceeded to give his support and collaboration to this date.

Through research they discovered that the Director Alan Clarke ( Scum, The Firm, Made in England, Rita, Sue and Bob Too) was born in Wirral but has since passed away. They decided that they would honour him with an award dedicated in his memory
for any filmmaker with outstanding skills. His family attend each year on the award night to present. Awards are also presented in all the other categories to filmmakers.

Since it’s conception the Wirral International Film Festival has grown from strength to strength with more submissions every year. Interest has been that keen that the organizers have decided to open up the Festival worldwide to all film makers.

Awards are given to all categories and individual involvement in all aspects of film-making
