Weird is a qualifying festival for the European Animation Emile Awards, which means that the winning Spanish and European short films are pre-selected for the prestigious European award. On the other hand, Weird is part of the list of short film festivals that have been qualified with the AIC Quality Certificate – Spanish Association of the Short Film Industry. The Certificate is an annual distinction to differentiate and reward festivals that perform an exemplary function for the dissemination, protection and professionalization of the cinema and its industry, and especially the short film.

WEIRD - INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION SHORT FILM MARKET AND FESTIVAL

REGULATIONS

1. ORGANIZATION AND OBJECTIVES

Weird is glad to organize the 12th International Animation, Video Games and New Media Market in Segovia (Spain) from September 28th to October 4th 2020. The meeting will dispose of an International short film market with the aim of creating collaborations between international and national animation distributors, producers, TV channels, festivals, directors, professionals and students. The market is a meeting point for the dialogue and exchange among animation, video games and new media sectors.
Moreover, it will be celebrated as well the 8th edition of Weird festival – International Animation Short Films Festival. The festival will be composed by a short film selection from the participants of Weird short film market, divided in two categories: national and international.
Weird Festival is an European Animation Awards qualifying festival. The European and Spanish short film winners at Weird Festival 2020 will be automatically preselected and could participate in the prestigious European award.

2. CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATION

2.1. The international animation market is open to all directors, producers and distributors of animation short films whatever their country of origin.
2.2. EVERY TECHNIQUE OF ANIMATION IS ACCEPTED (3D Digital, 2D, stop motion...).
2.3. The market is divided in two sections:
INTERNATIONAL SECTION:
- A selection of international short films completed after 1st of January 2019 (about 100 short films).
- A selection of international music videos completed after 1st of January 2019.
NATIONAL SELECTION:
-All Spanish short films completed after the 1st of January 2019, which get registered for first time at the market.
2.4. We will NOT accept animation pieces of different formats to the aforementioned (short films and music videos).
2.5. The length allowed, credits included, is 30 minutes for the national and international categories and 10 minutes for the music videos.
2.6. There is not submission fee.
2.7. The organization has the right to use some pictures or extracts (max. 20 seconds) of the selected short films to promote those works and Weird itself.
2.8. All the titles will be available for the registered professionals at the market’s screening booths in order to be watched, respecting and safeguarding author rights. The short films will never come out of Weird nor could they be watched outside of the market dates.
2.9. The deadline for submissions is June 25th 2020.
2.10. Participants are required to send their short film in original version with English subtitles (if the language is not English) or a copy in English. Subtitles will not be required in the music video category.
It will be also necessary to send two digital high-quality images in horizontal format (1920x1080) without titles, credits, logos or watermarks.

If you choose C option the delivery of the short film can be done through a download link (H264 .MOV format, Audio PCM or AC3) to logistica@weirdmarket.es (do not forget to attach the pictures required).

3. WEIRD CATALOGUE

3.1. The works selected for Weird Market will be part of the catalogue in its corresponding category.
3.2. The committee in charge of the selection of the international short films will be formed by film festival programmers and specialists of animation in all the categories.
3.3. The catalogues will be distributed to all the professionals participating to the Market, as well as in other animation international and national events, with the only aim of promoting those works.
3.4. All the selected works will appear in the catalogue with the distribution contact information previously provided and authorized.
3.5. Directors, producers or distributors must guarantee that they are in legal possession of the project rights, including those indirectly related (e.g. the music).

4. WEIRD FESTIVAL – INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION SHORT FILMS FESTIVAL

4.1. The short films participating in the Market (international and national selection) will be eligible to be selected in Weird Festival, which will be the subject of a second selection process.
4.2. The festival will take place in the cinema of La Cárcel_Segovia Centro de Creación (Sala Julio Michel, Avda. Juan Carlos I s/n) September 28th to October 4th 2020.
4.3. Weird Festival short film screenings will be non-profit for professionals and general audience, with the aim of promoting these selected works.
4.4. The selected short films will be screened exclusively within the period and place of the festival. The festival will not unilaterally manage new screenings or activities without prior communication or without permission of those responsible for the rights.
4.5. Weird Festival will award several recognitions at the different sections, in addition of special mentions if the Jury considers it.

*None of the prizes will bring monetary compensation.
Every award will be delivered during the closing ceremony which be hold on Saturday October 3rd, 2020. For those directors who cannot attend, we will send the corresponding trophy within one month.
4.6. Weird is European Animation Awards qualifying festival. The European & Spanish short films awarded will be automatically preselected to participate in the prestigious European award.

5. COMMUNICATION OF SELECTION

5.1. The selected short films for the Market and for Weird Festival will be published in September on the website www.weirdmarket.es.

6. PROFESSIONALS ATTENDANCE

6.1. Please contact us at logistica@weirdmarket.es if you need more information or would like to participate in Weird 2020.
6.2. The short film directors selected at Weird Festival will be invited by the festival to present their works. This invitation includes: professional accreditation for all the event, accommodation of one night and meals.
6.3. Under no circumstances we will require the presence of the directors or representatives of the short films to be selected or awarded in Weird Festival.
6.4. The short film directors selected for Weird catalogue will have one free professional accreditation for all Weird.

7. REGISTRATION CONDITIONS

7.1. The participation in the market and festival implies that all conditions and terms described in these rules and regulations have been accepted.
