About the festival

Verzió is a joint project of Vera & Donald Blinken OSA Archives and the nonprofit Verzió Film Foundation. Since 2004 it hosted over 150,000 visitors, and presented over 1000 documentary films from all parts of the world.

In 2020 Verzió was held exclusively online due to the risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been an extraordinary challenging year from all aspects, and it also turned out to be the year when Verzió successfully implemented the first fully online film festival in Hungary that paved the way for many future online events.

The 18th festival edition in 2021 took place as a hybrid event, and hosted both offline and online screenings with various accompanying events for professionals and the general audience.

The upcoming, 19th Verzió Film Festival is to take place November 8-16 2022 in the cinemas and the following week online at festival.verzio.org.

Verzió has three competition sections and several noncompetitive sections. The films in the competitons are evaluated by renowned international jurors based on their artistic values and their take on human rights issues. The winners of each section are awarded with a monetary prize.

Mission

Our goal is to present films that value democracy and rule of law, respect for human rights, evoke solidarity and tolerance, respect for human dignity, and that promote freedom of speech and media so that our viewers can encounter various human stories and understand our world better.
Verzio Film Foundation is committed to the idea of creative and critical thinking and supports the use of documentary films in education, bringing the most urgent social problems to the attention of younger generations as well.
We believe that personal, sometimes moving, sometimes funny and also empowering stories presented as quality film experiences can contribute to dispelling false prejudices and deepening our understanding of each other and the world.

The experiences gained at the festival can help us to see the world in a new, more critical way, and give us strength to make long-term decisions to change our lifestyle. We believe in the power of images, and in the value of their messages.
