About the festival

VAF is Denmark’s largest international animation festival and a celebration of all things animated. VAF film program is all about giving the great film experiences, where the audience meets and experiences artists desire to tell stories and to experiment with animation as craftsmanship.

In addition to the film program VAF always offers workshops, exhibitions, talks and an industry track.

VAF is held each year at the end of September in Viborg, region of Jutland. VAF is a non profit festival.

Terms and rules

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

1. It is eligible for any film created frame by frame, in any technique (analogical, digital or mixed). Animated sequences must correspond to a minimum of 60% of the total duration of the film.

2. All genres are welcome

3. Language: All films must have English subtitles also when the spoken language is English.

4. Duration of the film:
Feature Film: Length: min. 40 minutes.
Short Film: Length: max. 25 minutes.
Student Short Film: Length: max. 15 minutes
Experimental Short Film: Length: max. 15 minutes
Short Film for Children: Length: max. 15 minutes

5. Completed in 2020 or 2021

6. Films can only be submitted once - no resubmissions from previous years

7. The applicant should not charge screening fees to the festival, regarding the screening of films in competition.

8. Only online digital submission.

9. For cinema screening formats must be PRORES. For selection screening we accept low quality copies.

SELECTION

Entrants will be notified of the selection result no later than june 2021

The VAF team will organize a selection committee to be in charge of the final selection for the competitions. Afterwards the VAF team will select a jury for each competition all consisting of three members. The juries will be the ones awarding prizes to the films in our film competitions.

If your film is selected we will need this:
1. The film in PRORES for cinema screenings.
2. Hardcoded English subtitles, if the film has dialogue.
3. A Press kit including: Short resume of the film, bio about the director, stills from film and of the director
4. That all film and music rights and clearances have been obtained by the filmmakers (In accordance with copyright laws)

VAF is authorized to use a short excerpt of the film (min. 1 minute) in a radio, TV, social media and video program presenting Viborg International Animation Festival.

VAF is authorized to screen the winning films from VAF21 as part of a special screenings of VAF21 in cities in Denmark.

VAF Best Animated feature includes all internationally produced animation films of any genre. The length of the films is minimum 40 minutes including credits.

VAF BEST SHORT ANIMATED FILM

VAF Best Short Animated Film includes all internationally produced films of any genre or style. The length of the films must not exceed 25 minutes including credits.

VAF Best Student Film includes all internationally student animated films from art and animation schools. Mix techniques, including live action, accepted. The length of the films must not exceed 15 minutes including credits.

The short films in this competition are aimed at young people aged 12-14. ANIMOK Youth Jury Award is giving to a short film selected by a group of young kids age 12-13 years old.

VAF Best Experimental film includes all internationally produced animation films which relates experimentally to animation, both in technique and in storytelling. VAF Best Experimental film is about breaking the laws of nature and the limits of what one can do with animation technically. The length of the films must not exceed 15 minutes including credits.
