About the festival

This inaugural Mental Health Film Festival was launched on the World Mental Health Day, Oct 10, 2019. It is the first of its kind in Malaysia, aiming to:

1. increase awareness about mental health through short films and videos;

2. share experiences that meant to inspire, heal and empower the patients during on-the-ground activities; and

3. to instil the spirit of 'destigmatising mental illness' and there are places that can efficiently share their concerns;

There is a submission fee of $5-10 USD - this fee helps us to cover the cost of running the competition. If you cannot cover the cost of the entry fee, please contact us. Please note that:

1. Submission fees are non-refundable;

2. The festival cannot accept or assume responsibility in the event of loss or damage of screening materials;

3. At the festival we have a complete short film contest as well as retrospectives, special curated forum and Q&As with the industry practitioners and filmmakers;

4. We present stories of lived experience of mental illness in an effort to promote a national conversation around mental health; and

5. Funds raised from the festival will go to support projects helping the disadvantaged in our community especially those with mental health issues through our charity partner (to be announced) and its programs.

Previous selected submissions would be qualified for this year competition, for FREE.

Terms and rules

All films MUST follow the following rules:

1. Provides an inspiring voice for social justice and human rights for people with mental health;

2. Highlights positive contributions made by mental health recipients;

3. Fights stigma and defies stereotypes associated with mental health; and

4. Shares real-life stories of people with mental health concerns

Genre: Mental Health
(suicide prevention and co-occurring disorders, such as addiction, with mental illness).

Films MUST be about hope and recovery. Mental Health and suicide prevention MUST be the focus topics of the film, which includes but is not limited to:

1. Anxiety

2. Depression

ALL FILMS MUST BE RATED "G" or "PG-13."

Please DO NOT submit any other films unrelated to mental illness.

Film Requirements:

Spoken Language: Films MUST be in English spoken language or Bahasa Malaysia/Indonesia spoken language. Films other than in English language must have English subtitles.

Anyone, under age 18, submitting a film must have parental/guardian consent. Please contact us for more information.

All films must follow this export format:
