About the festival

The Taiwanese American Film Festival (TAFF) is an annual non-profit arts and cultureprogram that has quickly become the nation’s premiere showcase for TaiwaneseAmerican cinema and filmmaking talent.

Founded by a group of young Taiwanese American artists in 2017, the vision of TAFF is to cultivate the next generation of emerging Taiwanese and Taiwanese American filmmakers by creating a platform to celebrate and champion their work. TAFF’s values center on authenticity, community, inclusiveness, and empowering artistry and collaboration.

TAFF has continued to break audience and box office milestones each year and in it’s 2nd year, was officially recognized by the presiding President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing Wen (2018).

Our fourth edition of the Taiwanese American Film Festival will be held on Oct 24, 2020. Due to COVID-19, this year’s festival will be the first of its kind, held LIVE online on our partner platform.

The Taiwanese American Film Festival will nurture the next generation of filmmakers who are ready to capture audiences with their unique brand of filmmaking and storytelling.

ORGANIZER INFORMATION:
With support from the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan and Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles, the 4th Annual Taiwanese American Film Festival (TAFF) is held by Taiwanese American Professionals - Los Angeles (TAP-LA).

Taiwanese American Professionals (TAP) enhances the Taiwanese-American community by networking individuals interested in professional and career development while emphasizing the promotion and preservation of Taiwanese American cultural identity.

TAP-LA is a chapter of Taiwanese American Professionals, a national program of Taiwanese American Citizens League (TACL). TAP chapters make up the largest network of Taiwanese American young professionals in the United States, and can be found in most major cities spanning coast to coast.

Established as a program by Taiwanese American Professionals of Los Angeles, TAFF will serve its fourth year organized by a crafty and passionate team of experienced individuals from the filmmaking and AAPI community.

GRAND JURY AWARD:
The grand jury prize winner will be awarded a monetary prize of $2,000 towards their project. Winner will be selected by a panel of jurors from the film industry.

Terms and rules

ELIGIBILITY:
The Taiwanese American Film Festival accepts original short film projects by filmmakers of Taiwanese descent. Projects must be an original film that includes major Taiwanese or Taiwanese American elements, including subject matter, writers, directors, and principal cast. Adaptations are not eligible unless the original idea is your own in an alternative format. All genres (including but not limited to animation, narrative, documentary) are eligible for consideration.

Currently, we are accepting short films under 25 mins in length that have been produced after January 1, 2019.

If you are interested in submit your feature film for the festival's closing film (non-competition category), please direct your inquiries to tafilmfestival@tap-la.org.

EXHIBITION FORMATS:
All invited short films will be screened on our partner online platform.

Only digital formats. Quicktime file, D- Cinema (DCP) with required .MOV file conforming to Apple ProRes 422 HQ (1920 x 1080 24p 48 kHz)

35mm film, HDCam, Mini DV, Digibeta, Blu-ray, and DVD are NOT acceptable for exhibition.
Exhibition formats of invited entries must be sent to the Festival to arrive by Oct 1, 2020.

If your entry is selected for exhibition, the Festival will also request the following optional materials to maximize exposure for your film: promotional graphics, press materials, trailer, etc.

Invited entries in language(s) other than English MUST have legible English subtitles.

SCREENING FEES:
The Festival does not pay screening fees. Instead, we choose to invest our resources in producing the best possible showcase for your work, and promoting your work as widely as possible.
