About the festival

Shot by the Sea is a film festival and event. We are a coastal community here in Galway on the fantastic Wild Atlantic Way coastline. We are looking for films that tell stories set in coastal landscapes, towns and villages.

Whether you are a first timer or a seasoned filmmaker, get ready for a fresh and exciting new film challenge. Our Festival has three categories.

1. Films which will be Shot by the Sea along the Galway Atlantic Coast during the month of April 2020. Films can be up to 5 minutes long with additional 60 seconds for end credits.
2. Irish films shot at any time of the year in coastal towns and villages all around the Island of Ireland - coastal stories of any genre no more than 6 minutes long including credits

23 International film submissions - we would also like to screen international short films, no more than 6 minutes including credits, which are shot in a coastal location.

You can shoot your film on a mobile phone, film or your digital camera, we don’t mind how you do it. We want all sorts of shorts films, all genres – Comedy, Romance, Tragedy, History, Horror…whatever you like. We welcome all forms of film, narrative, experimental and animation, from right across the globe. We know that there are some beautiful coastal locations and we challenge our filmmakers to use these in a new ways, new angles to tell exciting new stories.

​Our gala screening event will take place in Salthill, a fantastic, lively coastal village close to the city of Galway in the west of Ireland.

We will award prizes for :

Best Irish Film
Best International Film
Best Director
Best Actor
Best Cinematography
Best Edit
Best Actor
Best Sound

And other prizes may be announced before the event

Terms and rules

All films should be shot in a coastal location.
Films should be no more than 6 mins including all credits
Films not in the English language should have English subtitles
Final Deadline for submission will be 15th March 2020
If your film is selected to screen at Shot by the Sea we will require a digital download that may not exceed 2GB.
We do not have the facility to screen from DVD or DCP
