About the festival

The Scottish Youth Film Festival is an annual event celebrating the film-making talents of Scotland's young people. It also provides them an opportunity to come together as a community and over the course of the festival explore pathways into the film industry and creative arts.

Throughout the year groups of young people from across Scotland are invited to make short films of up to 7 minutes in length and submit them to the festival. Festival submissions are free and all films are assessed as part of the awards process.

Note that films from countries other than Scotland are not eligible and due to high demand we will be unable to watch those films.

This year the festival will take place October 24th and 25th. The festival will strive to give those attending a professional festival experience with awards and career networking opportunities.

In this period of pandemic and enforced lockdown we are partnering with National Libraries of Scotland to invite anyone to create a short film on the subject of 'Home'. Apart from being under 5 mins in length you are free to interpret the theme in any way you wish; It might be an event, a person, a feeling... and all three categories are available: Animation, Live-action and documentary are all accepted. We ask only that you use original music where music is required as we must still obey copyright laws. The best film under this theme (from any category) will win the award but the best entries from each category will go into the National Libraries Moving Image Archive as a historical record of our country at this unique time in our history. For this competition only we encourage you to include any members of your family regardless of your age.
