About the festival

The mission of the North Dakota Human Rights Arts Festival is to educate, engage and facilitate discussion around local and word-wide human rights topics through the work of artists of all mediums.

The North Dakota Human Rights Arts Festival is a traveling exhibition featuring 2D, 3D, performance artists, writers, and experimental filmmakers and animators who have work relating to human rights, civil rights or social justice issues.

PLEASE NOTE: This festival is NOT intended for narrative or documentary films. Filmmakers with films that fit those descriptions should instead submit their work to the North Dakota Human Rights Film Festival, which focuses solely on the art and craft of filmmaking and caters to those filmmakers.

Through FilmFreeway, the following artists are encouraged to submit their work:

1) Experimental Filmmakers and Animators. Works should relate to human rights, civil rights or other social justice issues. As this is an art festival in museums, creative endeavors are encouraged.

2) Short and long format screenwriters, poets or short story writers with works related to human rights, civil rights or other social justice issues. If selected, artists must provide a hard copy of their work to the festival by Friday, December 27. Upon acceptance, a digital packet will be sent to you with information regarding presentation, delivery, work return and promotion.

3) Musicians or performance artists with works related to human rights, civil rights or other social justice issues.

4) Photographers with works related to human rights, civil rights, or other social justice issues. If selected, artists must provide a hard copy of their work to the festival by Friday, December 27. Upon acceptance, a digital packet will be sent to you with information regarding presentation, delivery, work return and promotion.

Artists selected for the traveling exhibition will have their work displayed and screened in four cities in North Dakota: In January 2020 in Fargo at the Plains Art Museum; in February 2020 at the Bismarck Downtown Artist Co-Op in Bismarck; in Grand Forks in the spring (location being finalized); and in Minot a the Taube Museum of Art in June of 2020.

The Jury will award a "Best Of" award for each category. A "Best of Show" award will provide a cash prize to the winning artist.
