About the festival

The North Bellarine Film Festival (NBFF) is held each November at the Potato Shed in Drysdale and the Portarlington Neighbourhood House on the Bellarine Peninsula, about 90 minutes southwest of Melbourne.

The festival program is typically comprised of six Australian and international feature films and short/ experimental/ avant-garde film sessions.

The next NBFF is on 13 to 15 November 2020.

The feature film program will be announced in September and the short film program in October. The Emerging Filmmaker Award will be announced at the opening night of the festival.

Feature Films
The NBFF is seeking up to six feature films that will be screened during its main program on 13-15 November 2020. Films from any genre will be considered.

There is a US$25 entry fee (US$20 for Gold members) for each feature film submitted.

Emerging Filmmaker Award
This award is a jury-selected/ monetary award presented to an emerging filmmaker who resides or has resided in Victoria, Australia and is no older than 25 years of age. Film must be no longer than 15 minutes. Films of any genre will be considered.

There is no charge to submit a film to the Emerging Filmmaker Award.

Short film submission
The NBFF typically screens about 20 films during its two short film sessions. Films of any genre will be considered.

There is a US$5 entry fee (US$4 for Gold members) for each short film submitted.

Terms and rules

EMERGING FILMMAKER AWARD
1. The award is limited to filmmakers age 25 years or under at the time of submitting their film.
2. The person making the submission must reside or have resided in the State of Victoria (Australia).
3. The film must have been completed no more than two years before submitting.
4. Entries must be no longer than 15 minutes including the opening and credits.

SHORT FILMS
5. Short films must not exceed 20 minutes in length including opening and credits.

GENERAL RULES (APPLIES TO ALL CATEGORIES)
9. Submissions must comply with all entry requirements specified in this document. By submitting to the festival, you agree to the rules and terms.
10. There are no screening, travel, accommodation or freight fees paid unless agreed to by the NBFF committee.
11. Submissions must be made through FilmFreeway.
12. Entries must be submitted by the specified deadline. Late entries will not be accepted.
13. All genres of film are eligible.
14. The person making the submission must be either the film director or producer and the work must be their or the production team’s original work.
15. Filmmakers may submit multiple entries, but each must be submitted separately.
16. Laurels will be provided for selected films on request.
17. Entrants may withdraw their submission at any time.
18. Submissions cannot be changed. Changes to the film will require that the submission be withdrawn and re-entered.
19. The film must not infringe Australian copyright or defamation law.
20. The entry must not have been released theatrically or commercially or aired on commercial television or by streaming in Australia prior to its submission.
21. Screening copies for Official Selection will be provided by the film maker to the festival as 1920 x 1080 ProRes HQ mov files in stereo or 5.1 sound formats with no watermarks.
22. Entries must be in English or have English subtitles at the time they are submitted. Subtitles must be burnt in using white 85% Helvetica font using centre justified alignment.
23. Entrants agree to supply at the request of the NBFF any supporting documents relating to their entry including but not limited to proof of copyright for music or other materials used in its production, actor’s release forms and or proof of age or place of residence.
24. Film ownership remains with the filmmaker. The NBFF, however, reserves the rights to screen submitted films to an audience at any time during the festival or at an event that it organises as part of the festival and to use a film for promotional purposes including on the festival website.
25. Films rated X 18+ or RC will not be accepted. The NBFF reserves the right to make its own assessment of the film’s rating per the Australian Government Guidelines.
26. Entries will be selected/judged by a volunteer panel established by the NBFF. The NBFF will consider the panel’s advice and, at its discretion, choose each category’s films. All decisions by the panel and the NBFF are final and cannot be appealed. No feedback will be provided on submissions.
27. The NBFF reserves the right not to grant the award or screen any films or to remove a film for consideration for the award for any reason.
28. Entrants agree to indemnify the NBFF and hold them harmless from any damages, liabilities, losses, costs, expenses, obligations or claims arising out of a breach of their agreements, obligations, presentations and warranties under these rules. By submitting to the festival, you agree to waiver all legal action against the festival, its organisers, venue, associates, stakeholders and affiliates.
29. We do not consider material which can be understood as rough cuts, music videoclips, TVCs, corporate or trainings, pornographic, home video, and or a work in progress.
