About the festival

We program non-traditional documentaries, works that focus on the underrepresented, the personal, and the culturally specific. We believe these approaches offer profound experiences of art made from life.

The first annual Mimesis Documentary Festival brings filmmakers together for an immersive week of film screenings, masterclasses, workshops, and discussions. The 2020 edition will be reimagined as an artist-focused online presentation from August 12-18 as a response to the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing world health crisis.

Mimesis was created as a platform for nonfiction artists, scholars, and creators to learn, share, and engage with one another. Our online festival is a multimodal opportunity for both exhibition and participation, with a chance for filmmakers to screen their films while directly networking with peers, instructors, students, and established professionals. Short and feature length programs will be available for streaming throughout the week alongside live events geared towards both filmmakers and the general public. Many of these events will be participatory and accessible with limited enrollment to allow the best environment for a fulfilling interactive experience.

Mimesis is an initiative of the University of Colorado Boulder’s Center for Documentary and Ethnographic Media to create and foster a local, regional, and international network of documentary artists and scholars. We are filmmaker-focused, community oriented, and committed to providing a platform for the infinite potential of nonfiction media.

Terms and rules

We strongly believe in transparency for filmmakers in our submission and selection process. We will commit to programming 80% of our festival from submission-based content, with the other 20% reserved for the selection of a featured filmmaker and to fill in programming gaps as needed. While not all submissions will be screened at the festival, everyone who submits a film through FilmFreeway will be given full access to screenings and events as well as priority registration for all interactive sessions. All submitted films will go through a selection process utilizing a 5 point checklist, and we will provide feedback based on this rubric to filmmakers whose works were not selected for inclusion. We acknowledge the systemic opacity that is often built into the film festival submission and selection process, and it is our goal to bridge the gap between festival and filmmaker as much as possible.

All submissions are considered for the 2020 festival.

We give priority to films completed after January 1, 2017.

We also favor films that have not been publicly shown in Colorado.

Selected filmmakers must sign a Screening Agreement.

Early Deadline: March 31, 2020
Regular Deadline: May 31, 2020
Late Deadline: June 30, 2020
Notification: July 12, 2020
Festival Dates: August 12th -18th, 2020

**Submission fee waivers may ONLY be granted to current University of Colorado students**

Entry fees are non-refundable.

All films must be submitted through an online link only.

If selected, filmmakers must provide a downloadable version of their film as an mp4 or .mov in the h.264 codec with a container resolution of either 2048x1152, 1920x1080, or 1280x720.
