About the festival

This is the official home for both MECCAcon IFF and THE CUTAWAY (our monthly screening room)

MECCAcon IFF, our 6th year, happens this September 19th, now ONLINE! We will be streaming via StreamYard!

MECCAcon International Film Festival, aka MECCAcon IFF, founded in 2014 and registered under Ava DuVernay's company ARRAY, highlights independent films starring & from creators of the African diaspora. Short films are primary, but feature films have been added as well. We always have some of the best filmmakers in our festivals. We believe in showcasing GREATNESS to the public eye! Filmmakers in the past have included but aren’t limited to: Jackie JJ Stone, Yolonda Ross, Evita Castine, Bobby Yan, Stefon Bristol, Nadia Sasso, Jay Woo, Mariama Diallo, Darius Clark Monroe, Sanicole, James Bland, Xavier Burgin, Derek Dow, Ka’ramuu Kush, dream hampton, Wi-Moto Nyoka, Jahni Kwatre, Donnie Leapheart, Gabrielle Tesfaye, Eliciana Nascimento, Nosa Igbideon, Rodney Stringfellow, Korstiaan Vandiver, Daye Rogers, Rashad Frett, and many more.

Midwest Ethnic Convention for Comics and Arts - MECCA, aka MECCAcon, is a large comic book/literacy convention and international film festival held annually in Detroit, MI. The primary reason M.E.C.C.A was established was to instill knowledge primarily in the younger art culture.

The CUTAWAY, aka #THECUTAWAY313 and #CUTAWAYandCHILL, is also available for a wide variety of private film functions, including #PrivateScreenings, #Fundraisers, #MovieParties and much more! Please contact us for more information or to set up a room viewing at AMONYETenterprises@gmail.com. Because of COVID19, we had to unfortunately cease all events in March. We will be bringing them back in the fall!

FULL TABLE RESERVATIONS: for larger groups (5 or more) can be accepted by phone or e-mail at AmonyetEnterprises@gmail.com / 313451-0297. (please contact us with reservations at least 2 hours before the screening).

FILMMAKER INFORMATION: If you have a movie you would like to submit for a potential public screening/engagement, please email us for submission information. We accept will be accepting submissions formally thru FilmFreeway via our MECCAcon IFF account.

Terms and rules

Short films are to be no longer than 40 minutes long, unless approved.

Main characters and/or subject line are to be of the African diaspora.

Some films are only shown at one festival, others are shown at multiple.

Payments are non- refundable. Payments do not guarantee your film to be selected.

Film submissions are to be digital submissions only. Film submissions should include the following:

Digital download : vimeo, youtube, etc, unless notified for a physical copy
Film poster, with laurels, if applicable
The description of film, short and/or long
Bio/headshot, website, email of filmmaker if it is the person who is submitting

Payment in US dollars are made by PayPal. A completed entry form and an entry fee must accompany each film.

We will accept online payment by PayPal or via credit card, (Master Card, and Visa preferred). Please do not send checks and/or money orders. The nonrefundable Entry fees are in U.S. Dollars. When submitting to the festival you are agreeing that, if selected and the invitation accepted, to screen the submitted film during the dates of the festival.

MECCAconIFF reserves the right to disqualify a submission, without refund of any kind, if eligibility requirements are not met including if eligibility status changes post-submission. Incomplete entries without proper fees will be rejected.

MECCAconIFF does not pay any screening fees for presentation of the film during the festival.

ALL SUBMISSIONS SHOULD BE SENT TO US AS SECURE ONLINE SCREENERS. MECCAconIFF no longer accepts DVD/BluRay screeners as standard submissions.
Priority is given to World Premieres for features & shorts.

All films must be in English or with English subtitles. Foreign language films must be dubbed in English or presented in their original language with English subtitles.
Promotional, instructional or industrial films, and raw documentation of performances are not eligible.

Films cannot be older than 1 year, unless approved directly by MECCAcon IFF. Please email us directly for inquiries before you submit.

Films cannot be available on online streaming services, unless approved directly from MECCAcon IFF. Please email us before you submit.

Submission of your work confirms that MECCAcon International Film Festival is hereby granted the right to utilize any film including promotional stills and information submitted and accepted during the Festival and/or at any other Festival event for promotional purposes in MECCAcon International Film Festival. The individual or corporation submitting the film hereby warrants that it is authorized to commit the film for screening, and understands and accepts these requirements and regulations for participation in MECCAcon International Film Festival. The individual or corporation warrant the submission of work and there are no disputes regarding the ownership of the submission and this film is not subject to any litigation nor is any litigation threatened. The individual or corporation also warrant the submitted material does not defame or invade the rights of any person living or dead and will indemnify and hold harmless MECCAcon International Film Festival, Midwest Ethnic Convention for Comics and Arts, Amonyet Enterprises, Maia Williams, its directors, management, staff, and sponsors, and defend them against all claims, demands, losses damages, judgments, liabilities and expenses (including attorney’s fees) which may be incurred by reason of any claim involving copyright, trademark, credits, publicity, screening, and loss of or damage to the screening videos screened or entered arising out of MECCAconIFF’s exhibition and promotion of said film- should such film be programmed as part of the MECCAcon International Film Festival.

MECCAconIFF reserves the right to make any necessary changes in event scheduling or programming. The selection committees’ decisions are final. All responses by MECCAcon International Film Festival (MECCAconIFF) will be made by email.

Films that are screened in the city of choice within (3) three months prior to MECCAconIFF MAY NOT screen with us except at the sole discretion of the festival. This rule is strictly observed.

Submissions MAY NOT be withdrawn from MECCAcon International Film Festival once they have been entered, except at the sole discretion of MECCAcon International Film Festival.

Films that have been selected to screen with MECCAcon International Film Festival MAY NOT be withdrawn once filmmaker accepts and signs our agreement to be screened with us.
