About the festival

The Health and Justice Film Festival is focused on highlighting filmmakers who aim to spur social, political, and environmental change. The festival is produced by Independent Voices, the filmic branch of 102.3 FM WHIV - a community radio station dedicated to human rights and social justice. Not only do we showcase films that shine a light on health and justice issues, we provide a platform for panel discussions and community engagement. Independent Voices believes that storytelling has the power to inform, educate, and mobilize audiences around a variety of concerns. We support international, national, and local artists in the culturally vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Public health and social justice go hand-in-hand. This broad and inclusive lens involves an array of topics, from gun violence prevention and mass incarceration to infectious disease awareness, reproductive justice and much more. Last year, subjects portrayed in our film festival included international health, HIV/AIDS awareness, health disparities across racial lines, trauma, indigenous injustice, and environmental health.

Independent Voices teamed with Tulane University for the Public Health Film Festival last year, and now in our second year, Independent Voices is moving locations to The Broad Theater in central New Orleans. Screenings, discussions and an afterparty will take place during this three-day event. We invite you to submit your film and be a part the Health and Justice Film Festival.

Multiple categories in both shorts and feature films. Awards are presented on the last day of the festival.
