Film festivals in the time of COVID have prompted exciting innovations! In 2020, the 8th Annual Festival is going VIRTUAL! The Friday Harbor Film Festival will stream selected documentaries and shorts for 10 days, on October 15-25, 2020. The virtual festival will also feature live-streamed Q&A sessions with filmmakers and selection of festival favorites buy audience votes. The festival will feature films highlighting fascinating island cultures, marine ecology, heroic adventures, sustainable agriculture, social justice, current environmental issues and stirring human interest stories. Going virtual means our audience is worldwide.

OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSION FESTIVAL REQUIREMENTS

Feature Documentary and Docu-Drama films about the diverse cultures and environments of the Pacific Rim and beyond. Films will feature fascinating island cultures, revealing marine ecology, heroic adventures, sustainable agriculture, social justice, current environmental issues and stirring human- interest stories.

Shorts Films all considered 30 minutes or less, not limited to documentaries.

Student Film Categories, Age Group 11-17 and 18-26. Please designate filmmaker age with submission. Student Film Submission must be 2 to 15 minutes. Live action or animated Documentary Short Films.
-Features: Documentary and Documentary Bio Dramas
-Shorts: All

Friday Harbor Film Festival features award winning documentary films about the diverse cultures and environments of the Pacific Rim. Films will feature fascinating island cultures, marine ecology, heroic adventures, sustainable agriculture, social justice, current environmental issues and stirring human interest stories. Live screen sessions with filmmakers will be scheduled throughout the virtual film festival event.

The virtual festival will also feature “live” streamed Q&A sessions with filmmakers, and audience selection of festival favorites. Student Film Submission must be 2 to 15 minutes, Documentary Short Films for consideration at the Friday Harbor Film Festival. Student Films feature two categories: ages 13 – 17 & 18 – 26. Festival viewers will choose the Laszlo Pal Emerging Filmmaker Award in each age category. Laszlo Pal, a former board member of the Friday Harbor Film Festival, passed away in 2018. He was a filmmaker and taught the art of film making to university students. FHFF honors his memory with this award.
