About the festival

The Quito International Film Festival aims to promote auteur cinema to a new generation. It has been created as a festival to discover new talents and trends.

The festival counts with an International Competition for first and second fiction feature films, a competition for Ibero-American Short Films, a section for Ecuadorian Films and a section for films for children.

The festival was founded in 2016 by the Film School of UDLA University in Quito. It's a festival mainly organized by students and their professors. The festival counts with four venues and has a young and fresh atmosphere. Its jury-members come from all over the world. The QUITO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL had the pleasure to welcome distinguished guests such as Canadian-Mexican Film director Nicolás Pereida, Claudia Huaiquimilla (Chile), Kiki Álvarez (Cuba), Florencia Persia (Argentina), Jorge Forero (Colombia), the New York film critic Ruth Goldberg, Roberto Doveris (Chile), film-producer Rich Henrich (USA), script-writer Abel Arcos (Cuba), director Laura Amelia Guzmán (Dominican Republic), Mexican film-music-composer Daniel Hidalgo, Brazilian director Emiliano Cunha, German producer Nicole Kellerhals, director Mark Schlichter and film-critic Pedro Adrián Zuluaga (Colombia) in its previous editions. It combines master-classes, film-screenings, Q&As in order to promote the cultural and artistic scene of Ecuador.

Terms and rules

5th QUITO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (FICQ)
TERMS AND CONDITIONS

1.1. General Conditions Main Competition OPERA PRIMA
Feature narrative first or second films, released after January 1st 2019. Ecuadorian premiere is required.

1.2. General Conditions Main Competition CORTO JOVEN
Fiction short films from the Ibero-American region (including Brazil and Portugal) or directed by naturals of that territory. The films should not exceed the length of 25 minutes and they must be finished after January 1st 2019. Ecuadorian premiere is required.

1.3. Submissions
The deadline for submitting feature and short films to all sections is March, 31st 2020. Submissions are only possible on FilmFreeway www.filmfreeway.com/ficq. Make sure to include all the information required. Submission is free of charge.
ALL SUBMITTED FILMS MUST HAVE SPANISH SUBTITLES.
The selected applicants for the Main Competition OPERA PRIMA should send the exhibition copies in Blu-Ray and DCP formats with Spanish subtitles in case that this is not the spoken language of the feature film.

1.4. Insurance for Exhibition copies
The Festival is not responsible for damage or loss of digital files occurred during their transport. In case of damage or loss during the festival, the organization will respond with the cost or reposition of the storage medium of the delivered archive.

1.5. Catalogue and promotion material
In case their film gets selected, the applicants should provide all the necessary information for the catalogue and other printed forms of communication of the festival, within the established periods. The applicants authorize the use of fragments of their film for further promotion in any form.

1.6. Jury and awards Main Competition OPERA PRIMA
The winner of the Main Competition OPERA PRIMA, will be awarded 1.500 USD and it will be announced the 22nd of August 2020 during the ceremony.
The Festival will gather an international jury, formed by recognized members, with no relation to the films of the competition. The decisions of the jury will be final and confidential.

1.7. Jury and awards Main Competition CORTO JOVEN
The Festival will award two prizes within the Main Competition CORTO JOVEN, both for the amount of 500 USD, and announced the 22nd of August 2020 during the ceremony.
The Festival will gather an international jury, formed by recognized members with no relation to the films in the CORTO JOVEN selection. They will award the Best Ibero-American short film and the Best Ecuadorian short film.

1.8. Audience Award
The Festival will also grant an Audience Award to the short-film with the most votes online and the feature film with the most votes directly by the movie-theater audience.

1.9. Digital Festival of the Short Film Competition
In order to diversify the audience and make it possible to all Ecuadorian audiences to participate, the Festival will make available all the short films in the main competition CORTO JOVEN on a web platform operated by Fundación Telefónica. If the applicants to that section agree to participate at the Digital Festival, they should state it at the submission form. The films will be available only within the national territory and during the days of the Festival with restricted schedule. The inclusion in the Digital Festival is a necessary condition to participate for the Audience award.

First and second fiction feature films completed after January, 1st 2018 are eligible for this Competition. Films which have already participated in or won other festivals are also eligible. The films will be selected with the final decision of the Artistic Director and a Selection Committee and then invited to FICQ.

The category of Ibero-Americaan Short Films "Corto joven" welcomes all fiction short films directed by persons born in the Ibero-American territory. The films may not be longer than 25 minutes and should not be institutional or commercial works. The short-films must be national premiers and should not have been screened in internet or Pay-TV before.
