About the festival

The FERRARA FILM FESTIVAL is one of the fastest growing film festival in the World and the fastest growing in Italy, hosted in the northern Italian City of Ferrara, a UNESCO World Heritage site that serves as an incredible backdrop for this high profile cinematic event.
We are already accepting film submissions for the 2021 edition!

The Ferrara Film Festival, in just 5 editions, had big "movie premieres" in its competition with some of the major Italian and international movie stars. Ashley Judd, Alec Baldwin, Charlie Sheen, James Franco, Susan Sarandon, John Travolta, Sharon Stone, Ed Harris, Wesley Snipes, Michele & Violante Placido, Primo Reggiani, Maria Bello, Noomi Rapace, Maria Bello, Tom Wilkinson, Eric Roberts... just to name a few.

This is a global film competition that see at least 10.000 people attending each edition, that culminates in the Golden Dragon Awards Ceremony. The event includes movie themed collateral events, entertainment shows partnerships with many world class Institutions.
Ferrara Film Festival is the ultimate cultural and economical bridge between Hollywood, Italy and the rest of the World through Cinema.

At the Ferrara Film Festival there will be films "Off Competition" and "In Competition".
The selected films "In Competition" will be divided by the festival itself in the following sections (all applies for feature and short films) - When you submit your film, all you have to do is to choose between “Feature Film”, “Short Film” and “Documentary”... we’ll do the rest of the work for you!

Here below our detailed categories (for both feature films and short films):

"USA"
Films produced in the United States of America.
(The motion pictures can be filmed everywhere, but the Production Company must be legally based in the US).

"WORLD"
Films produced in the rest of planet.
(The motion pictures can also be filmed in the United States, but the Production Company must be legally based outside the US).

"DOCUMENTARY WORLD"
Feature Documentaries produced anywhere in the world.

"EMILIA ROMAGNA FILMMAKERS"
Films produced or shot in Emilia Romagna Region in Italy.

"FFF UNICEF"
Films with sensitive subject towards minors and kids.

"FFF EARTH"
Films that explore themes about the environment and Planet Earth.

"OFF COMPETITION"

At the Ferrara Film Festival there will be two movies “Off Competition”, usually an opening film and a closing film, and they will be American feature films of critical praise and commercial appeal. They will be World or European premieres.

The FERRARA FILM FESTIVAL is conceived and organized by the production company Perpetuus (based in Los Angeles, California), founded by producer, actor and screenwriter Maximilian Law who was born and raised in Ferrara.
The festival has also a partnership with the City of Ferrara, UNICEF, the Italian Chamber of Commerce and the US Embassy in Italy.

The awards of the Ferrara Film Festival are called GOLDEN DRAGONS, which recall the legend and mythological figure of the Dragon killed by St. George (the Patron Saint of Ferrara).

For each edition of the Ferrara Film Festival 6 judges will be assigned to choose the award winners in all categories.

NOTE: Special Career Achievement Awards will be dedicated and given to prestigious personalities in the Film Industry.

The “Golden Dragon” awards will be assigned in the following categories:

• Best Feature Film “USA”
• Best Feature Film “World”
• Best Documentary
• Best Short Film “USA”
• Best Short Film “World”
• Best Director
• Best Actor

Terms and rules

• Films cannot participate to other film festivals prior to Ferrara Film Festival in Italy (it's ok in other countries), but we reserve the right to make some exceptions!
• ​Each film can be any genre and from anywhere in the World.
• Each film cannot be older than 2 years from the current festival year.
• It must not have been released online (private screeners with password are OK).
