About the festival

NB: Due to Corvid-19 measures now in place around the world Destination Unknown is postponed until October/November 2020. Entry deadlines have been extended and event dates will be announced once we have an accurate estimate of when things can resume. All current submissions are still under assessment. If you made a submission under the "Extended Deadline" and you would like a partial refund due to the regular Deadline being moved forward. Please get in touch with us.

A celebration of the human spirit and our amazing planet. The festival brings awe-inspiring and thought provoking outdoor, adventure and conservation films to urban audiences. Encouraging conservation movements, and environmental awareness through adventure sports and travel. In 2019 we held our first event in Brisbane, Australia. In 2020 we will be returning the event to Brisbane in addition to several additional screenings around the world.

We are inviting you to a conversation. What drives us, what are our responsibilities to ourselves, each other and our home? Are you a warrior on the front line in the fight to save our planet. Or maybe you're a soul surfer chasing the perfect wave. Whether it’s a short film, feature film (narrative or documentary) , montage, or any other format you believe explores the spirit of enjoying and caring for our planet. We want your story.

A wide range of possibilities are accepted for submission. Does your work explore; extreme sports, wildlife & nature, a conservation issue, outdoor adventures, or low impact living? Does it inspire; personal growth and fulfilment, care for our planet, strengthening of our communities and reaching the human potential? Basically anything and everything to do with the outdoors is accepted. If you aren’t sure after reading this, send an email to check if this is the festival for you.

The Destination Unknown Film Festival is the latest creation from Festival Director Morgan Mackay, a Queensland Filmmaker, traveller, skydiving instructor, paraglider pilot and outdoor enthusiast. Morgan is the co-founder of The Brisbane Backyard Film Festival wich has been bringing independent QLD films to Brisbane Backyards for the last 8 years.
