About the festival

Cinema Verde, an Environmental Film and Arts Festival in Gainesville, Florida, was created to raise awareness of environmental issues through the arts. We will hold our twelfth annual festival February, 2021. Cinema Verde’s mission is to provide environmental education to the public through film, arts, workshops, events, tours and any other forum or media; to increase public awareness of environmental practices that enhance public health and improve quality of life in urban, suburban and rural settings. We bring community organizations, businesses and citizens together to help forge sustainable solutions for our future. We utilize a multi-disciplinary program of film, music, art, workshops, an eco-fair and eco-tours to connect participants with green initiatives in business, government and organizations seeking to solve environmental problems. Our vision is to expand the reach of environmental information to inspire, educate and engage participants in sustainable business and lifestyle solutions.

Our festival reaches more than 3,000 participants with screenings of an international array of 25+ professional films plus student submissions at our annual festival and monthly events. We engage local government, sustainable businesses, environmental organizations, visitors and the community with parties, an eco-art show, eco-tours and an eco-fair.

We open the festival with a VIP Reception, invite film directors to talk with our audiences following their films, hold a local pot luck honoring local farmers, host an eco-gallery; an Eco Fair with sustainable business and organizational booths, musical performances and promote eco-tours led by local guides showcasing the natural resources and green homes of the area.

We're a nascent festival in a small community, but we've received a tremendous amount of community support and an amazing array of publicity in our first five years. Come help us help you spread the word about environmental issues!

Cinema Verde is a not-for-profit environmental film festival produced by www.GoGreenNation.org to help build sustainable communities. Cinema Verde is funded in part by a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council and by the State of Florida Division of Cultural Arts. We welcome sponsorship inquiries and support!

Awards are given out to winning films in the listed categories. Unfortunately, at this time we are not able to give out cash prizes for these award-winning films.

Terms and rules

Our objective is to bring environmental awareness to our audience and guide us all toward sustainable solutions to the problems we face. Each film must be based on valid, factual information. Please no advocacy films. Those with a solution orientation will be regarded most favorably.

SHORT is GOOD - Please let us know if shorter versions of your film are available - our audiences sit through many hours of documentaries on environmental issues - it is much easier on them to get the info in quick, palatable doses rather than sad info droning on repetitively. Including solutions in the films is also essential.

Please specify which issues are addressed in the film (food, water, waste, energy, chemical contamination, population, social justice, sustainability, animals, sustainable business, green building, etc,) as well as the category entered.

Please specify whether any filmmakers, actors or screenwriters may be available to attend Cinema Verde screenings should your submission be selected for screening. Cinema Verde makes no guarantee regarding travel expenses – we’ll do the best we can to help and we hope you’ll do the best you can to join us!

Winners will receive full-access VIP Festival Passes to all Cinema Verde screenings, workshops, parties and events. At this time, prizes are only recognition, but we continue to seek cash sponsors for prizes in each category.

The individual or corporation submitting the film hereby warrants that it is authorized to commit the film for screening at Cinema Verde 2021, and understands and accepts these requirements and regulations.

The undersigned shall indemnify and hold harmless Cinema Verde and the Gainesville Environmental Film and Arts Festival, Inc. from and against any and all claims, liabilities, losses, damages, and expenses (including but not limited to attorney's fees, and costs of the court) which may be incurred by reason of any claim involving copyright, trademark, credits, publicity, screening, and loss of or damage to the screening videos entered.

Foreign language films must have subtitles.

All submissions must be cinema-quality high definition DVDs or digital media files. Please see category for details. Cinema Verde will not take responsibility for returning films submitted.

Winning submissions may not be withdrawn by the filmmaker.
