About the festival

Black Canvas Contemporary Film Festival announces its call for entries to Mexican and international films in every length, format, genre and category for its Official Selection in competition: which is divided in three sections: New Horizon, Mexican Short Film Competition and International Short Film Competition; each of which will award prizes for best film, best director and best cinematography.

The Fourth Edition of Black Canvas Contemporary Film Festival (Black Canvas - Festival de Cine Contemporáneo), will take place from October 1st to October 10th at several venues in Mexico City.

Film submissions will be accepted from February 1st to May 31st, 2020.

AWARDS AND PRIZES

-Prizes will be awarded by a jury of nine filmmakers or film industry professionals from all over the world.

-The jury will be split into three groups for each competition.

NEW HORIZON: INTERNATIONAL FILM COMPETITION

For:
-Best Film: the jury will award the statuette “Transmutation of the Canvas” and a monetary prize of $100,000.00 MXN pesos (One hundred thousand Mexican pesos) to the director.
-Best Director: the jury will award an acknowledgment and the statuette.
-Best Cinematography: the jury will award an acknowledgment and the statuette.

MEXICAN SHORT FILM COMPETITION

For:
-Best short film: the jury will award the statuette “Transmutation of the Canvas” and a monetary prize of $50,000.00 MXN pesos (Fifty thousand Mexican pesos) granted to the director by La Universidad de la Comunicación.
-Best Director: the jury will award an acknowledgment and the statuette.
-Best Cinematography: the jury will award an acknowledgment and the statuette.

INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM COMPETITION

For:
-Best short film: the jury will award the statuette “Transmutation of the Canvas” and a monetary prize of $30,000.00 MXN pesos (Thirty thousand Mexican pesos) granted to the director by La Universidad de la Comunicación.
-Best Director: the jury will award an acknowledgment and the statuette.
-Best Cinematography: the jury will award an acknowledgment and the statuette.

Terms and rules

NEW HORIZON: INTERNATIONAL FILM COMPETITION

In order to be considered for the competition:
-Films should be, at least, 45 minutes long, regardless the genre and/or format,
-Films should be the first, second or third works by the filmmaker,
-Films should have a production date from January 1st, 2019 onwards,
-Films should be submitted through the festival’s official website www.blackcanvasfcc.com or via FilmFreeway https:/ filmfreeway.com, and include a private link on Vimeo for private viewing purposes by the programmers (Works in Progress are accepted).
-Films should be considered for a Mexican premiere and not have been screened at any other Mexican festival beforehand.
-The Selection Committee withholds the right to directly invite films to take part in the program and include films from previous years which have not screened in Mexico beforehand.

INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM COMPETITION
MEXICAN SHORT FILM COMPETITION

In order to be considered for any competition:
-Films should NOT exceed 45 minutes in length, regardless the genre and/or format.
-Films should have a production date from January 1st, 2019 onwards.
-Films should be submitted through the festival’s official website www.blackcanvasfcc.com or via FilmFreeway https:/ filmfreeway.com, and include a private link on Vimeo for private viewing purposes by the programmers (Works in Progress are accepted).
-For the International Short Film Competition a fee of 15€ (fifteen Euros) will be charged via Paypal.
-For the Mexican Short Film Competition, films should be considered for a Mexico City premiere and have not screened in Mexico City (Priority will be given to films that have not screened in Mexico beforehand).
-For the International Short Film Competition, only films with a Mexican premiere status will be accepted.
-Films which have already had public screenings through digital media or internet will not be accepted.
-For all those films which are selected, if Spanish is the original language, English subtitles are required. In regard to foreign language films, a dialogue list in Spanish is required.
-There are no restrictions on the number of films submitted by the same director or production company.
-The Selection Committee withholds the right to directly invite films to be included in the program.

MEXICO INSIDE THE CANVAS (outside the official competition)

In order to be considered:
-Films should be, at least, 45 minutes long, regardless the genre and/or format.
-Films should have a production date from January 1st, 2019 onwards.
-Films should be submitted through the festival’s official website www.blackcanvasfcc.com or via FilmFreeway https:/ filmfreeway.com, and include a private link on Vimeo for private viewing purposes by the programmers (Works in Progress are accepted).
-Priority will be given to films which have not screened in Mexico beforehand.
-The Selection Committee withholds the right to directly invite films to take part in the program and include films from previous years which have not screened in Mexico beforehand.

OFFICIAL NOTICE OF SELECTION
-The Official Selection will be made public by September 2020.
-The festival will contact those filmmakers whose work has been selected in order to provide them with all the information regarding shipping details for screening materials (DCP, blu-ray, .mov, AppleProRes 422HQ) and other information on the festival.
-Mexican Short Films are to be delivered in a DCP format along with a backup blu-ray.
