About the festival

World in Bengaluru

We are pleased to announce the 8th edition of BIFFES, the Bengaluru International Film Festival to be held during January 28, 2016 to February 4, 2016.

The festival is being organized by the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy for Government of Karnataka supported by Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce. Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka State in India, is an important centre of International film culture in keeping with Karnataka’s glorious heritage and the State’s achievements in the fields of literature, fine arts, and cinema. The Kannada Film Industry has made signal contribution to the quality and range of cinematic expression and grown to produce over a 100 films every year. Films from Karnataka have won national and international recognition and critical acclaim at various Film Festivals.

We would like to recall here that our 7th edition which was held during December 04-11, 2014 was a resounding success with screening of nearly 174 films across 11 screens from more than 45 countries, and witnessed by more than 5000 delegates who enjoyed and appreciated the quality of cinema presented.

The eighth edition, to be held this year, during January 28 – February 04, 2016, will have different sections as mentioned below. Selection of films will be made by expert committees.

5. Retrospectives
6. Country Focus
7. Grand Classics
8. Homages
9. FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) award winners
10. Network for promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) award winners
11. Special Themes: Climate Change & Drought
Freedom of Speech & Expression

Like in the previous editions Competitive sections for Asian, Indian and Kannada Cinema will also be held with handsome Cash prizes.

The festival will also host various forums for academic interactions like seminars, Workshops, Master classes etc., for the benefit of film professionals, discerning audiences and students on different aspects of cinema.
We invite filmmakers, film critics and the film fraternity to participate in the festival.
We sincerely hope the film lovers will utilize this opportunity to enroll as delegates and enjoy the contemporary world cinema and the classics.

Asian Section: One film will be awarded a prize money of Rs. 5 Lakh (Approx. US$ 7500)
Chitrabharathi (Indian Competition Section) : Three prizes will be awarded with a total prize money of Rs. 4 Lakh (Approx. US$ 6000)

Terms and rules

BIFFes will appoint the Selection Committee comprising of filmmakers, experts on cinema and eminent persons from other fields.

No person with any involvement in the films submitted will be present on the Jury panels or Selection Committee. All committee members shall attest to this in writing.

The Selection Committee could suggest to the filmmaker to apply to another section of the competition if found more suitable.

• Only Fiction feature films accepted - NO SHORT FILMS ACCEPTED
• Selected Films have to be in one of the following formats: DCP or Bluray.
• All non-English films must be sub-titled in English. It is preferred that even English language films are similarly subtitled
• Films that have participated in other festival competitions are also eligible.
• One representative of every film invited in the competition section is eligible for travel (economy) and hospitality at BIFFes.
