About the festival

As part of victims of crime week, BEACON and Oaklands College Media Department are looking for films that motivate, move and inspire to be screened at our short film festival. Our aim is to share stories and films from around the globe in order to raise awareness about the issues faced by victims of crime.

All selected films will be screened in front of a live audience at the 400 capacity Weston Auditorium in the University of Hertfordshire and the Myriad Theatre at Oaklands College and will be given feedback from a panel of film makers, lecturers and members of the Police & Crime Commissioner's Office.

Your entry can be in any genre of film from documentary to fiction shorts. Our only criteria is that it has an association with the theme ‘victims of crime’ and that it is between 1 and 10 minutes in length.

More about BEACON

BEACON is an Office of the Police & Crime Commissioner for Hertfordshire initiative that provides support to victims of crime, helping them to cope and recover from their ordeal.

All films submitted will automatically be considered for the award of Best Film.

The judging panel will consist of a film maker, a Film & TV Lecturer and a member of the Police & Crime Commissioner's Office. Each panel member will have a different angle that they will be looking at.

All selected films will receive a BEACON Film Festival 'Official Selection' Laurel Leaves award and the winner will receive a 'Best Film' Laurel Leaves award.

Formats and delivery of final film

Selected films must be provided in an appropriate high quality digital format as soon as you receive notification that your film has been chosen to be screened. As long as your submission is in a high quality digital video format, our technical team can transcode the file if necessary.

You can submit your final film via Vimeo or an appropriate file transfer site such as Wetransfer. If you do choose to submit your film using Vimeo, please ensure that you activate the download option.

We can also accept postal submissions. The postal address and details will be sent out in an email to all successful entries. However due to the proximity of the deadline to the date of the screening, this option is not recommended and should only be used if it is impossible to transfer your film over the internet.

Selection and Judging Panel

All entries will be viewed by a selection committee and we will endeavour to provide feedback depending on the volume of submissions. However, all films officially selected will receive written feedback on their submission.

You will be notified whether you film has been selected or not on or after Friday 2nd February 2018.

The decisions of the selection committee and judges is final and cannot be disputed.

Venue and date is subject to change. The organisers of BEACON Film Festival reserve the right to withdraw any film selected and to terminate the event at any time.
