About the festival

The BCM Sci-Fi & Fantasy Film Festival is a celebration of great short films dealing with sci-fi and or fantasy themes. The Festival submissions open to all filmmakers and accepts all genres (with the appropriate theme). Narratives, animation, music videos, documentaries experimental, and expressionistic films are welcome. Running time should be under 15 minutes (under 10 is ideal), and be suitable for viewers as young as 16.

Please only submit if your film is in the sci-fi or fantasy genre.

Student filmmakers in middle and high school and college are strongly encouraged to submit.

Filmmakers and themes dealing with the LGBTQ community are obviously very welcome to submit.

We will award the following categories:

Best Science Fiction Short Film
Best Fantasy Short Film
Best Animated Short Film
Best Production Design

All films will receive a "Official Selection" certificate and a png with the festival logo that filmmakers can attach to their marketing campaign.

Terms and rules

1) We ask that the film have a primary theme of Sci-Fi or Fantasy.

2) All films not in English should have English subtitles.

3) The film needs to be suitable for viewers as young as 16. Please no nudity, or excessive profanity or drug use.

4) The total running time should be be not exceed 15 minutes, though about 10 minutes is ideal.

5) The filmmaker will allow Berkeley Community Media (a not-for-profit public access television station) to air the short on Channel 28, and stream on BCMTV.ORG. The shorts will be put together as one program, and air at least three times. If the filmmaker would not like to have the short run on television, please specify this in the submission. Not wanting your short to air will not effect your submission, but we would appreciate it very much.
