About the festival

UPDATE: Submissions for AFF Youth have now closed!

Currently, the Adelaide Film Festival is continuing to assess the impact of Covid-19 on AFF Youth. While South Australia is currently in a positive situation, children’s activities are less certain as schools rightly take a cautious approach.

We will announce our plans for AFF Youth before the end of July 2020.

--

The Adelaide Film Festival (AFF) is a celebration of Australian and international screen culture with a distinctive curated program that includes premiere screenings, special events, awards and forums that attract industry and general public.

AFF Youth is the newest arm of the acclaimed Adelaide Film Festival, supported by the South Australian Department for Education. Previously known as the Adelaide International Youth Film Festival, this program is designed to showcase and screen the best professionally made and independently made films for a youth audience, complimenting the main program but adapted for a younger audience aged 5 to 18.

The program will include screenings for schools and families. It will be accompanied by a substantial screen careers pathways program involving workshops, forums, Q&As and production opportunities. It will also involve a youth jury program, based on the Giffoni model.

We are calling for submissions from local and international professional filmmakers for shorts, feature films including feature documentaries, TV series (single and multi-episode) and VR (drama, documentary, hybrid, experimental and animation).

We also welcome shorts submissions from all youth for our national and international program and from South Australian school children both primary and highschool for our Statewide School Filmmaking Competition.

Submissions to AFF Youth have now closed. Entries for the Statewide School Filmmaking Competition are currently being accepted with a deadline of 1 September 2020.

Every film screened at AFF Youth will receive an "Official Selection" laurel.

General Guidelines
At the AFF values films that tell powerful stories. Stories that entertain and enrich the viewer. Films that are bold and are brave, that show the filmmakers creativity and courage. Films that capture something special about what it means to be young. All films must be FOR children or a youth audience.

All films entered into AFF Youth must meet the following criteria:
– They must be under 10 mins (if made by students)
– They must be in English, or be subtitled in English
– They must be High Definition. (1920 x 1080p)
– Films must be made in the last 2 years.
– They must not contain scenes of graphic violence, nudity or extreme coarse language (they must be accessible to a general audience)
– You must own the rights (or be in the process of negotiating the rights) to any music used in the film
- You must specify who your ideal audience is eg. Ideal for teenagers 13yo and above or ideal for 5-10 year olds

Adult Filmmakers
Films made by adults which have a strong focus on themes surrounding childhood and adolescence, i.e made for, not necessarily about children and adolescents, are welcome in the festival. A film is categorised as ‘made by an adult’ if both the director and the producer were over 18 years old at the time of completion of the film.

Senior School Filmmakers
Films made by filmmakers who are aged 16 to 18 (year 10 to year 12).
Films are eligible for the Senior School Made category if the producer, the director, and the camera operator/cinematographer (this can be the same person) are 15yo but under the age of 18. Your film can be written by someone of any age, and can include cast members of any age. You can engage the help of an adult or professional for services such as music, editing, VFX, post production.

Middle School Filmmakers
Films made by filmmakers 13 to 15yo. A film is categorised as a Middle School Made Film if the producer, director and camera operator (this can be the same person) were 12yo and under 15yo when the film was completed. The cast can be any age, and you may have assistance from an adult or teenager in the form of technical and creative advice. An adult or teenager may also be involved in the editing and post production process. The important point is that the key creative decision makers and the young people driving the project from idea to completion are under 15yo.

Primary School Filmmakers
Films made by filmmakers 5 to 12yo. A film is categorised as a Primary School Made Film if the producer, director and camera operator (this can be the same person) were 12yo and under when the film was completed. The cast can be any age, and you may have assistance from an adult or teenager in the form of technical and creative advice. An adult or teenager may also be involved in the editing and post production process. The important point is that the key creative decision makers and the young people driving the project from idea to completion are under 12yo.

AFF Youth Rights - If your film is selected to screen at AFF Youth, AFF holds screening rights for 12 months from the date of screening. This is non-exclusive. AFF reserves the right to use your film or excerpts of your film including stills to promote future events or regional screenings and such similar events owned by the AIYFF. If selected, you must inform AFF if you do not wish your film to be used for these purposes.
