About the festival

AddAMovie Film Festival - (in)Voluntary Body Mutilation

The AddAMovie film festival is back virtually, with the possibility of a (safe) live screening event on March 8th, 2021.

Notice that this date is International Woman’s Day. This festival is meant to highlight women in particular who have changed their bodies in some way, either forcefully or by choice - body modifications and mutilations, cultural ideals of femininity and modesty, deliberate self harm, etc. What better day to show our support than on IWD?

Submissions rules are listed below;

For Filmmakers: AddAMovie Film Festival invites you to submit your short or feature film that reflects the theme: (in)Voluntary Body Mutilation. It can be fiction, documentary, art/abstract/video art, or animation. Preference will be given to films created within the last 5 years. By submitting your film, it will automatically enter it into the competition; however, this does not guarantee that your film will be selected for a screening.

For Composers: Score a short section from Lotte Reiniger’s, silent animation Cinderella from 1922. If selected, your part of the score will be performed by Quartet Metadata during a live screening of the film. You can see the entire film at this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kku75vGDD_0 and choose ONE section of the movie. Section listings will be available shortly. By submitting your score, it will automatically enter it into the competition; however, this does not guarantee that your score will be selected to be performed.

Composers: Chosen by a professional jury, up to three winners will be honored with the AddAMovie Award for the their compositions.

In addition, the first place winner will receive an archival recording of their piece, performed by Quartet Metadata, a New York based string quartet, our ensemble in residence. The finalists will also be invited to attend the AddAMovie Film Festival 2021 - (in)Voluntary Body Mutilation festival presented virtually on March 8th 2021. They will also receive a consultation with the member of the quartet, as well as with one of our resident composers.

Chosen by a professional jury, up to ten films will be screened at our with the AddAMovie Award for the their films, and their creators will
be invited to attend the AddAMovie Film Festival 2021 - (in)Voluntary Body Mutilation festival presented virtually on March 8th 2021.
The sections will be announces by February 15th 2021.

The jury as well as our live audience (in the event of a virtual only festival, the audience will cast their votes online, real time) will choose 3 winners of the selected/screened films; The winners will be announced at the event.

In addition, the first place winner will receive a commitment to have their next film scored by one of our residents composers free of charge.
