About the festival

This festival is part of the Gila River Festival, a yearly event that celebrates one of the last un-dammed high desert rivers in the Southwest.

Our festival this year will be graced by the presence of world historical film-maker and thinker, Godfrey Reggio, who will deliver the keynote address. As part of the film festival, we will be showing Reggio's ‘Qatsi trilogy,' and three short programs of timelapse films that fit in with the festival theme of "Life out of balance."

Timelapse filmmaking has blown up in the past decade, from the first film that really made people aware of the intense satisfaction derived from the compression of time, namely Godfrey Reggio's "Koyaanisqatsi." Today, timelapse films can be seen at the start of news broadcasts, the intro title sequences of films and TV shows such as House of Cards, and integrated into narrative and non-narrative works. This film festival is interested in Timelapse films where the compression of time and/or exploration of space is foregrounded. Hyper-lapse, and pixelation works will be considered if they are combined with timelapses. Generally non-narrative/experimental films will have precedence, but films that tell a story largely based on time-lapse film-making will be considered.

Silver City has been named one of the 50 best places to live by National Geographic Adventure Magazine, and is nestled just outside of the 3 million acre Gila National Forest and the Gila Wilderness area, the first place in America so designated. It is one of the wildest and most remote wilderness areas in the lower 48.

Best in show will receive...

Film makers whose films are selected will be hosted in Silver City, and receive free passes to the Gila River Festival, and events therein. We will not pay for travel costs for artists who seek to attend.
